Jo & Niko: A Greek Wedding in a Botanical Setting

Nikos, a proud Greek-American, and Jo, from the vibrant shores of Singapore, living in the USA, intertwined their lives in a tapestry of love and tradition. The evening before their wedding they planned for a tea ceremony and a gathering for later, which unfolded like a dream, with a breathtaking aerial view capturing the essence of Chania. A beautifully decorated venue, set against the backdrop of the sea, glowed warmly under the delicate string lights that illuminated the night. It was a vibrant celebration steeped in the Singaporian & Cretan cultures, where the intimate ritual of the tea ceremony and the lively sounds of the Cretan traditional music and dances echoed through the air, filling the night with pure joy. This day was about bonding and exchanging love. Nikos, Jo and their parents had a small ritual of drinking from the same cup, symbolizing the sharing of life’s joys and sorrows. The scene was tender and heartfelt, followed by the gifts from their parents, Nikos and Jo shared this intimate moment, surrounded by their loved ones, a reflection of the deep bond they share. Later that night they celebrated their bond like the Greeks: raki, laouto and loud dancing!

When the day of their wedding arrived, it was all calm and pretty! The wedding ceremony took place in a mountain village in Chania, where the quaint church they chose perched high above the village. The chapel, a typical Greek Orthodox one, was nestled in the wild, lush greenery of Crete—a setting chosen by the couple for its unique beauty, far from the usual seaside views. The wedding ceremony was steeped in tradition, with the couple sharing a glass of wine and their close friend & Jo’s sister acting as “koubaroi” and placing their rings on their fingers, and exchanging their wedding wreaths, aka “Stefana”, that symbolize their vow to cherish and honor one another for a lifetime, becoming the king and queen of their new home.

Jo’s bridal bouquet and the floral arrangements of the chapel reflected the local flora, tying the entire celebration back to the island’s rich traditions. After the ceremony, they were guided by their photographer to have their private photoshooting, officially as Husband & Wife, while their guests headed at the reception garden venue, where they were welcomed by some sparkling wine, Cretan olives, Raki shots and of course Cretan nibbles. The tables where decorated with fresh Cretan greenery, loads of candles & fresh lemons, inviting the guests to indulge in a feast of local delicacies, each dish a testament to the island’s rich culinary heritage. Every part of the meal that was served to the guests was prepared with vegetables and fruits from the venue’s gardens, while all elements not produced by them were sourced from vendors within a 20km radius, keeping the bio element high, and following a “farm to fork” logic.

The party continued at the amphitheater of the venue, where guests lit their sparklers for the couple’s first dance, creating a magical atmosphere. With the sparks lighting up the night, the couple danced their first dance together, surrounded by the glow of the fireworks and the cheers of their loved ones. Mo-Cocktails and Cocktails, infused with the distinctive spirit of raki, added a festive flair to the evening. Every detail, meticulously planned , spoke of their deep connection to the land. This was beautifully embodied in the handmade glasses cases, woven with care on Cretan looms, that Nikos and Jo gifted to their guests—a thoughtful and enduring memento of their special day.
